This is my first post as a servant of the Lord in the Worship Ministry and my role as a bassist in the church.
When a worship band plays, it attempts to usher in the presence of the Lord into the midst of the congregation. Each person that shares the pulpit with the pastor has a special blessing and anointing of the Lord. But along with that comes the additional spiritual responsibility.
I shan't go further into that at the moment. It's another topic for another time.
So what is the role of the bassist in the whole context of the body of Christ? I'd like to echo the words of Abe Laboriel when he said,
"The bass player builds the house that all other players get to live in."
So if the bassist is uncomfortable or messes up the timing or groove of the team [emphasis intentional], not only does everyone feel confused, the confusion becomes a distraction to the congregation and causes people to lose focus on their seeking the Lord to seeking out the cause of the 'noise'.
The bass instrumentalist is hence, a very humbling role indeed.
The Bassist makes people move. Grooving is God's inate gift to all of us. We all (believers or otherwise) have a heart that beats rather consistently. It fills the spaces and bridges gaps in a music band (Hmmm, what is the role of each band member?? I suppose we can discuss this another time too).
Jesus Loves YOU!!!
